Many food products have Palm Oil listed as 'vegetable oil' and in non food products there is at last count over 200 alternate names for palm oil.

If an ingredient in the product you are researching has any one of the following names then it is 95% likely to be palm oil unless you know the company has a clear 'no palm oil' policy so on odd occasions these ingredients may also be derived from other sources.

If the product you are checking has one of the ingredients below you may want to contact the company to find out it's derivation.

Palm oil and vegetable oil

Only 3 vegetable oils must be labelled in food products in Australia and New Zealand. Those are peanut oil, sesame oil and soy bean oil. The reason for this is that a percentage of the population suffers allergies to these oils.

All other vegetable oils can be labelled as vegetable oil. However, the label must declare the amount of saturated fat in the product. So if the label states vegetable oil and then goes on to state the amount of saturated fat you can count on that vegetable oil being either palm kernel oil, palm oil or coconut. This is a way of potentially identifying if a product has palm oil in it as other vegetable oils are not saturated.

If you want to avoid buying palm oil, when buying food look for the label stating it is vegetable oil. Then look for saturated fat. If only vegetable oil (no animal fat listed) is used and there is saturated fat in the product - you are buying palm kernel oil, palm oil or coconut, most probably palm as coconut oil has a distinct flavour where as palm oil is bland.

If a product's saturated fat content is over 40% of it's total fat content, it will almost always have palm oil in it.

Here is a comprehensive list of alternative names for Palm Oil. Unfortunately the list is HUGE, but it is in alphabetical order for easier reference.

Please Note: Please use this as a guide only, to 100% confirm that a product has Palm Oil or Palm Oil derivatives in it, email the company who makes the product to find out.

PALM SUGAR is NOT Palm Oil.  Palm Sugar is manufactured and harvested in a completely different way, so palm Sugar is safe. Vegetable Gum is also NOT Palm Oil so it is also safe.
